Discover Languages Month

12 Feb

After Europe successfully designated and celebrated 2001 as the “Year of languages,” the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) felt inspired to establish a year of languages in the United States.  ACTFL worked with governor sponsors and on February 17 2005, the Senate approved the resolution designating 2005 as “The Year of Languages.”

The goal of “The Year of Languages” was to raise awareness in the United States about the importance of developing proficiency not only in English, but in other languages as well. After a successful year of celebrations, the effort to highlight the benefits of language learning has continued through the campaign “Discover Languages” and February has been designated the “Discover Languages Month”.  The goal of this campaign is to inform people of the cognitive, academic, social, cultural and economic benefits of language learning.  Spanish Club will celebrate this month by offering thirty-minute lessons in the languages spoken by the club members.  Join us in our February meetings and learn some Korean, German, and Hindi among other languages.  For more information see Mrs. Martin (K002).
