High School Happenings

11 Sep

Dear Parents,

The beginning of this school year has set off to a great start thanks to your wonderful children.  We’re thrilled to have them back and are happy to report that they are busy learning many wonderful things in their classes.

Next week, ASK will be celebrating Dot Day, which is based on the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds.  The highlights of the week will be a celebration of creativity, collaboration and courage, which are essential skills in a 21stCentury education.  Stay tuned to our blog for updates on Dot Day events.

We thank you all for your support as we transition to a new uniform and an upgraded attendance policy.  We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you of the practices we are taking to ensure the safety and learning of your children.

Arrival to School

All students are expected to be in class each day at 7:15 a.m. We recommend students arrive by 7:00 a.m. to allow time to arrive to classes in a timely fashion.

We understand that there may sometimes be delays, and we allow students a 30 minute window for circumstances such as traffic.  However, students will not be allowed on campus after 7:45 a.m. unless they are accompanied by a parent.  Students arriving after 7:45 a.m. will be sent home until they can be brought to the High School Office by a parent.

Checking Out During the School Day

Students are not allowed to leave campus unless a parent or guardian comes to the High School Office to sign them out.

We ask that all parents provide the Office with alternate family members who would be able to collect children in the event that parents are unavailable or away.

Thank you for your support as we work to ensure the integrity of our school day.

Departure from School

School ends at 2:00 p.m. and we ask that all students depart by 2:15 p.m.unless they are participating in an after-school activity.  After 2:30 p.m. students will be asked to wait in the High School Office until parents arrive to collect them.

Thank you for your patience in the transition to our new uniform.  We are expecting a shipment of larger sizes this week, so we hope to be able to outfit all students soon.  As of next week, students are expected to be in the new uniform or the old uniform (blue slacks and a white polo).  Jeans, leggings and T-shirts are not acceptable school attire.

High School Handbook

Students have received the High School Handbook and we have reviewed pertinent sections in our opening assemblies.  We will continue to focus on important sections over the next month to ensure everyone is aware of our expectations.  Please review the Partnership for Success insert and return it to your child’s Homebase teacher.

Open House

We look forward to meeting the parents of all of our students at Open House on September 25th.  More details will be e-mailed out and posted to the blog on Sunday, September 21st.

School Photos

Student portraits are scheduled for the week of September 28th.  Students will have their portraits taken through their English classes and Class Photos will be held on Thursday, October 2nd.  Students will receive information about their scheduled portrait day through their English teachers.

Senior Checklist

Ms. Hakim would like all seniors and their families to pay attention to the following information; this information will be available in the Counseling Office, the Daily Bulletin and it will be posted to the High School Blog:

  • Be aware of SAT registration dates
  • Be aware of TOEFL exam dates
  • Create a Naviance account
  • Senior biographies are due on September 18th
  • Finalize their college list
  • Be aware of application deadlines
  • Give teachers enough time to write references

Upcoming Standardized Testing

All grade 9 students will be taking the MAP test on October 20 – 24.  More information will be e-mailed to parents of ninth graders in October.

The PSAT is scheduled for October 15th.  Students can register in the Business Office and receive a student guide from the Counseling Office.  The exam cost KD 5 and is open to Sophomores and Juniors.  We encourage all Juniors to take the exam in order to prepare themselves for the SAT, which they will be taking next year.

The last day to sign up for the October 11th SAT exam is September 12th.  The next SAT exam is November 8th and registration ends on October 9th.

The ACT exam is on October 25th and the last day to register is September 19th.  The next ACT exam is December 13th and registration ends November 7th.
